Roman is the first calligraphy style that I learned. Since the first day of my journey, I was fascinated by the sophisticated structure, and philosophical geometry in Roman letters. Coincidentally my love for Japanese lacquer painting -- Urushi -- began around the same time.

I found the similarities between Urushi and Roman letters. The technique of using hand tools can be meeting at the final goal: making good object to such artistic level.

I got the inspiration to make this book from the documentary “Urushi - Bone, Flesh and Skin: The Making of Japanese Lacquer”. “Bone - Flesh - SKin” perspective can be applied to many other crafts, including writing calligraphy styles. We see letters from the core and gradually grow the taste of looking letters to the very best details like contrast, space, serif… They are always fascinating and enjoyable to create, but also the most difficulty of Roman capitals.

In this book, I will discuss my method of learning Roman from the point of view as an Urushi craftsman, using mostly the broad edge nibs and maybe a touch of other tools for flourishing and graceful serifs.
