Flourished Italic: From classic to modern approach - 6 week online course
What we do in this course?
The art of flourishing is always fascinating to all kinds of calligraphy in history. Italic, with both lowercases and uppercases, has unlimited possibilities to enhance its visual rhythm, elegance and expression with flourishes without compromising legibility. Italic flourishing also set the first step of Roundhand calligraphy and its ornamental extensions for centuries later.
So what is exactly flourishing? And how do we do it with comprehension?
In next 6 weeks, I would like to share with you my study of flourishing from Renaissance Italic (also known as Cancellaresca) to the “new” form of Italic developed by 20th century with the introduction and influence typography (typographic calligraphy). We will learn how to control the writing tools, pen manipulation techniques with broad pen nib.
Week 1 & 2: Renaissance Italic flourishing, inspired by masters such as Cataneo, Francisco Lucas,…
Week 3 & 4: The dawn of Italian Hand, almost pointed pen Italic form & flourishes by Giovani Francesco Cresci
Week 5 & 6: Typographic calligraphy & the new “taste” of flourishing, inspired by modern calligrapher & designer such as Hermann Zapf, Heather Child, Erik Lindegren,…
