Italian Hand 6 month online course
Italian Hand 6 month online course
About Italian Hand
During late 16th century Giovan Francesco Cresci made a reform of Italic, marked the shift from formal Renaissance Chancery Script to an expressive, more dynamic, and higher contrast style named “Italian Hand'“. Since then, Cresci’s influence traveled north into France, the Low Countries, and England. Italian Hand reached its peak during 17-18th centuries thanks to engraving technology allowed writing masters to publish more complex exemplars. Although the British Empire become famous for English Roundhand later, its roots traced back to the adaption of Italian Hand and continued to use both hands in official documents and copybooks. Writing Masters also developed their own versions of Italian Hand based on their national style such as Louis Barbedor, Lucas Materot (France), Jan van de Velde, Maria Strick (The Netherlands today), Edward Cocker, John Ayres, George Shelley, John Seddon (England)
What we do in this course?
In next 6 month, I would like to share with you my study of Italian Hand with two main influences - the Dutch masters (late 16th - early 17th centuries) and the English masters (late 17th - early 18th centuries). We will learn how to control the writing tools, pen manipulation techniques with pointed pen nib and composition design,… to mimic the unique look of Italian Hand and its variations across countries.
Each week we have a live session for writing demonstration and homework discuss & feedback. I want to keep the class small, 8 students max. As it is semi-private class, I can be flexible to adjust the lesson to each individual. All students can also learn from each other.
6 month is definitely not easy, which requires a lot of commitment and concentration. Don’t worry! One lesson won’t take much time, online session is only 30 minutes to 1 hour weekly. The most importance is your self practice with discipline, a little at a time!
I will provide handouts, personalized homework and historical documents.
* Level requirement: This class is not suitable for absolute beginners who never picked up calligraphy pen or never tried pointed pen calligraphy before.
